What is VPN ?
Internet security usually requires services and resources to be restricted to computers located in a campus network, a corporate network, even much smaller departmental networks. On the other hand, users frequently need to access these restricted resources from foreign networks, such as from their homes, other campuses, hotels, airports, etc.
A Virtual Private Network, VPN, is a tool to connect a computer which is located outside the campus network, allowing it to become part of the campus/corporate network through the public internet. In other words, the client computer becomes part of the network with which it establishes a VPN connection, regardless of where it is actually connected to the internet.
Bilkent VPN services
VPN services at Bilkent are established and maintained for Bilkent students and staff who need to access those resources which are restricted to Bilkent University network’s IP address blocks. Examples are Bilkent library resources and some specific Bilkent sites.
VPN services are available to active Bilkent students and staff but cannot be offered to Bilkent alumni because of the licensing terms enforced by the on-line resource suppliers.
Bilkent’s VPN server, namely vpn-ng.bilkent.edu.tr is a multi-protocol server. It supports various VPN protocols that users can choose from. Instructions on installing VPN on different operating systems and protocols can be found here.
