L2TP/IPSec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) is the easiest way to setup a VPN connection on OSX computers. OSX supports this protocol natively. The point-to-point communication between the client computer and the VPN server is encrypted using  IPSec suite to provide end-to-end encryption.

Setting up a VPN Connection

Open up your “System Preferences” and click on “Network”. Click on the “Notifications” icon.

Click the “+” button to add a new network connection.

  Choose “VPN” as the interface and choose “L2TP over IPSec” as the VPN type.

Name your connection “Bilkent-L2TP”.

  Fill in the server address (vpn-ng.bilkent.edu.tr) and your VPN account name.

Then click “Authentication Settings”.

  Fill in your VPN account password and enter “bilkent” (all lowercase, without the quotes) as the shared secret.
In the “Options” tab, check all boxes except the one related to verbose logging.
When a VPN connection is established, you should see the VPN icon and connection duration at the top right of your screen.
Visit http://whatismyasn.org and make sure that you are connected to the VPN server.
